Afresh develops an AI-powered solution to optimize grocery store ordering and operations for fresh food departments, with the goal to both reduce costs for retailers and eliminate food waste. Our products achieved best-in-class efficiency gains and a cumulative 200+ million pounds of food waste prevention.
Principal Engineer
Transitioned back into an IC role to roll up my sleeves and do hands-on engineering again. I'm one of two Principal Engineers at Afresh supporting a 50-person engineering org. I provide technical guidance and strategy across various initiatives while also leading deep technical projects of my own. One such project was leading the migration of our data platform from Snowflake to Databricks to reduce our costs and boost developer productivity by being on a unified platform. This was an org-wide effort and I coordinated responsibilities across all engineering functions.
Director of Product Engineering
Built the Product Engineering function from a team of 1 (myself) to 35 people spanning multiple teams and product lines. This was an incredible opportunity for me to scale an engineering org at a fast-growing startup. Our function owned all of the customer-facing products at Afresh, and we worked closely with Data, Analytics, and ML functions to integrate their services into our features. I led the org as we expanded our store-level products to include all fresh departments, built corporate data management and analytics tools, and launched the initial version of our distribution center forecasting solution. We improved the scalability and resiliency of our system to support tens of thousands of store-departments and a large national retailer (Albertsons). I scaled the team structure, processes and operations to effectively support multiple product lines and enterprise SLAs. I am especially proud of the people and culture on Product Eng. I hired our first 15+ engineers and brought on a group of incredible engineering managers to lead their respective teams. Together we built a team of kind, curious, and driven engineers who cared deeply about both customer and social impact.
Lead Product Engineer
Joined Afresh as the 2nd employee and a founding engineer. Afresh develops an AI-powered solution to optimize grocery store ordering for fresh food departments, with the goal to reduce food waste. I was drawn to the mission of using ML forecasting to tackle an enterprise problem with real environmental impact. I took the core ordering product from an early prototype to an enterprise-ready solution deployed at our first 3 customers. I built our initial iPad app, API backend, and product data models that laid the foundation for years to come. I worked closely with our customers to understand their store operations and to create a product tailored to their needs.
Rakuten is a Japenese technology conglomerate and online shopping company. Rakuten acquired e-commerce startup Slice and email management service Unroll.Me, combining them into a consumer data and market research business.
Engineering Manager
Managed a 5-person team responsible for all our mobile applications across platforms, with a total user base of 2M+ users. I owned the team's roadmap and hired 3 new engineers to support our growth. Collaborated closely with Product & Design to grow our user base through new features and delightful experiences. Our apps powered a market research business which grew to 8-figure revenue with several Fortune 500 customers. Our team was further responsible for modernizing our mobile tech stack. I spearheaded re-platforming our legacy Slice app to Swift and Kotlin, and migrating the Unroll.Me application to React Native for cross-platform support. We also developed a new analytics stack to better measure user behavior and increase our conversion rates. Towards the end of my tenure, I also led the mobile QA and Customer Support functions. I'm most proud of my role mentoring several junior engineers who have gone on to have incredible careers. I couldn't have asked for a better team and the people at Slice were truly outstanding and taught me a lot about leadership and integrity.
Lead Mobile Engineer
Joined e-commerce startup Slice as an early employee to take over all iOS development. I developed core features of the iOS application including purchase and package tracking, refund management, and spending analytics. Slice was regularly featured as a top package tracking app in the App Store. Slice was acquired by Rakuten in 2014, along with email management service Unroll.Me which joined our business. I built the Unroll.Me iOS application from scratch which achieved a top-10 overall ranking in the App Store and scaled to millions of users.
Mozign was a software consulting company that built custom apps and backends for various clients.
Founder & Engineer
Started my career by founding a mobile app consulting company where I led software development. We built custom mobile apps and full-stack backends from scratch for various clients. Clients included a Euroleague basketball team, a popular poker website, and local businesses in the Dallas area. As my first professional experience, this was an incredible opportunity to learn how to build production-grade software, interface with clients, and run a 3-engineer team. I also worked hands-on with product management and design which has continued throughout my career.
